Jurisdiction has been a centerpiece in the determining of whether or not Jay-Z is the father of Rymir Satterthwaite.

When so many steps are taken to prevent a certain outcome, in certain situations, it raises certain questions. In the ongoing dispute over paternity involving Jay-Z and his putative son, Rymir Satterthwaite, you have to ask yourself a question. If you potentially had a child, would you care about jurisdiction or where the child was conceived when it comes to determining paternity?
Jurisdiction has been a centerpiece in the determining of whether or not Jay-Z is the father of Rymir Satterthwaite. The father listed on Rymir Satterthwaite’s birth certificate initially, Robert Graves, was a teenager at the time, and according to a close source, he did not always believe that Rymir was his son, yet he helped raise him anyway. Robert Graves was Wanda Satterthwaite’s longtime partner.

As Rymir became of age, and Wanda Satterthwaite wanted closure, Robert Graves took a DNA test to clear his name of paternity in the courts. Wanda Satterthwaite wrote sworn affidavits, verified by witnesses, that she believed Jay-Z to be the father of Rymir. One of those witnesses to her signing one of those statements was Dr. Lillie Coley. Coley later would become Rymir’s Godmother as Wanda Satterhwaite’s health unfortunately began deteriorating. Wanda Satterthwaite passed in the process of trying to get closure and justice. The legal battle and Jay-Z’s defense has waged on for over two decades, with jurisdiction being a centerpiece. You might be asking yourself, how did the public not know about this?
If you are wondering why it is not bigger news that Jay-Z has a putative son whose biological relationship to him could potentially be confirmed through DNA testing, wonder no more. Media industry insiders and music industry insiders will tell you that Jay-Z holds sway in those industries. As a media CEO who covered the police corruption movement, I have seen complete media blackouts. Add politics to the mix, and Jay-Z is a powerful media mogul. In the case of Wanda and Rymir Satterthwaite, you have to question whether his money and influence could have played a role in the legal proceedings.

In the case involving Wanda Satterthwaite, Dr. Lillie Coley, and Shawn Carter, the initial hurdle to obtaining DNA testing was a previous determination of paternity involving another man who helped raise Rymir Satterthwaite. That is the importance of Robert Graves submitting to a DNA test. Wanda Satterthwaite’s reasoning is documented, and there are witnesses to the events. According to Wanda Satterthwaite’s affidavit, the only remaining possibility as the father of Rymir Satterthwaite is Jay-Z. Wanda has stated that, at the time, she only knew Shawn as “Rock.” This was before his rise to fame and later superstar status. Another witness also stated that she was present when the encounter happened. It is also alleged by a source that Deehaven, Jay-Z’s longtime childhood friend, claimed that Wanda Satterthwaite and Jay-Z had met. An important detail in the entire case is that Wanda Satterthwaite would have been only 16 years old at the time of conception.
The legal proceedings in this particular situation are interesting in that the courts seemed more interested in jurisdiction than determining paternity and potentially protecting a victim. Let’s take a look at the details.
On May 19, 2011, the Pennsylvania court denied Wanda’s renewed genetic-testing request under res judicata, the principle that a matter already conclusively decided cannot ordinarily be litigated again.

While the Pennsylvania proceedings were underway, Dr. Lillie Coley pursued a paternity action against Carter in New Jersey in 2011. Coley claims that the jurisdiction issue should have been resolved by a hired attorney that was later fired, with a claim that they were working with Jay-Z.
The New Jersey court denied the action in July 2011 on jurisdictional grounds. Not based on there not being evidence that Jay-Z could be the father. Based on jurisdiction due to an alleged error by an attorney, that later had to be formally reviewed according to Dr. Coley. In a legal sense, when we talk about “jurisdiction,” here is what it means.
Two distinct jurisdictional concepts matter here:
- Personal jurisdiction: Whether a New Jersey court had sufficient legal authority over Carter based on his connections to the state.
- Subject-matter jurisdiction: Whether the court had legal authority to adjudicate the particular dispute.
The New Jersey proceedings also involved the question of Pennsylvania’s jurisdiction over the existing paternity litigation. That is an issue that Dr. Coley claimed should have been resolved prior.

In June 2012, Rocco Law, Wanda Satterthwaite, and Dr. Coley succeeded in having a Pennsylvania trial court vacate earlier orders denying genetic testing, potentially reopening the path toward testing.
But Carter appealed.
In 2013, the Pennsylvania Superior Court reversed that decision because they claimed the trial court lacked jurisdiction to reopen the earlier final orders in the manner attempted.
This was a crucial development: the court was deciding whether prior orders could be legally reopened, not determining biological paternity through scientific evidence. Jay-Z was not required to take a paternity test.

The legal battle has continued ever since, with significant and shocking allegations involving events both inside and outside the courtroom. Both Rymir Satterthwaite and Dr. Lillie Coley have documented and spoken about these events, from allegations of a car being shot up and threats being made, to attempts to take Dr. Coley’s houses via liens over her pursuit of paternity for her Godson. Jay-Z has continued to mount a legal defense against efforts to compel a DNA test. A test that could potentially resolve the question of biological paternity and provide necessary closure for an entire family, regardless of the outcome.
Shocking new developments in the case, however, according to Dr. Coley, raise questions about the jurisdictional positions taken in previous court proceedings. If the new determination directly contradicts an earlier ruling involving the same jurisdictional question, it could raise significant questions about the previous proceedings. In her conversation with Why Main Street News, Dr. Coley stated that this development just recently happened.

With jurisdiction being a major factor in the legal proceedings that have prevented Shawn Carter from being compelled to take a DNA test, any clear discrepancies could become a significant issue for the courts. Even worse, if it were discovered that a jurisdictional misrepresentation was made intentionally, it could call into question the integrity of the legal process.
With Wanda Satterthwaite alleging that she was underage at the time, only 16 years old, there are even more ethical questions as to why Jay-Z was not compelled to take a DNA test. The evidence from the DNA test would prove, or disprove statutory rape. Additionally, if evidence were to surface that Carter improperly influenced the courts across multiple states, it could raise serious questions about whether the legal process was used to conceal allegations involving a minor. Such findings would have significant implications for both the courts and Jay-Z.
